What is a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Manual lymphatic drainage massage is a specialized therapeutic technique designed to enhance the flow of lymph—a fluid that plays a critical role in the body’s immune system. This gentle, rhythmic massage technique helps to stimulate the lymphatic system, encouraging the removal of waste products and excess fluids from the tissue.

Utilizing light pressure and specific hand movements, the therapist targets lymph nodes and pathways to promote circulation and improve overall lymphatic function. The treatment is particularly beneficial for individuals recovering from surgery, those with lymphedema, or anyone looking to support their general wellness.

By reducing swelling, alleviating discomfort, and enhancing relaxation, manual lymphatic drainage massage serves as a holistic approach to maintaining bodily health and improving recovery times.

Note: This treatment is not intended for immediate cosmetic changes or weight loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Absolutely! That being said, the definition of “Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage” has changed over the past 20 years. What used to be a gentle modality to stimulate lymphatic flow has grown online to include almost anything and achieve any outcome, including rapid weight loss and body sculpting. The Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage you’ll receive at Dandelion Massage Boston maintains the original clinical focus of the modality, which is to help you feel great by keeping your lymphatic system moving at max efficiency!

  • On average, the cost of a Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage can range between $100-$250 for one hour. Visit our Services Page for current single session and package pricing.

  • The first sensation you may experience is an urge to visit the bathroom! Lymphatic waste is expelled through the urine, so don’t be surprised if you feel the need to take a quick break during the session to use the facilities. Since the primary function of the lymphatic system is to filter out foreign particles, bacteria, and abnormal cells, an hour-long session of Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage typically results in an energy boost similar to what you’d experience after a health cleanse. However, depending on the toxins being filtered out, there is a chance of temporary nausea, headaches, or lethargy. These feelings won’t last, it’s just the lymphatic system doing its job!

  • Since Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is so light and gentle, you don’t have to worry about overdoing it! However, a good rule of thumb is:

    • At Least Once per Month - Wellness

    • Two to Three Times per Week - Acute Swelling Situations (ex. post-op)

  • Although Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is generally safe across the board, owing to its gentle nature, the sudden mobilization of lymphatic fluid may cause a problem for—and should be avoided by—people suffering from:

    • Blood clots

    • Cellulitis

    • Deep vein thrombosis

    • Fever

    • Heart disease

    • Infection

    • Kidney failure

    • Stroke

  • The waste products filtered out by the lymphatic system ultimately exit the body via urine or stool. To prevent dehydration, definitely remember to drink water after your appointment!

  • The immediate effects of a Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage can definitely include increased urination/bowel movements.

  • Depending on what your lymphatic system is filtering out, a Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage can result in pungent, brown urine.

  • Signs of lymphedema include:

    • Swelling of part or all of the arm or leg, including fingers or toes.

    • A feeling of heaviness or tightness.

    • Restricted range of motion.

    • Recurring infections.

    • Hardening and thickening of the skin (fibrosis)

  • The lymphatic capillaries rest right under the surface of the skin, so only very light pressure is required to mobilize lymphatic fluid. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage should not hurt! That being said, many alternative versions of this modality have appeared over the past 20 years, all calling themselves lymphatic massage. Read about What Is (and Isn’t) Lymphatic Drainage Massage on our Blog!

  • The lymphatic system is a network of delicate capillaries, nodes, and organs placed throughout the entire body. Although it’s this system’s duty to cleanse all the toxins, germs, pollen, and other gunk from the body, the whole thing moves quite sluggishly due to the fact that unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system does not have it’s own “pump”. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage physically pushes lymphatic fluid towards its goals, making the whole system more efficient! This results in a nice, clean, refreshing health boost that can be felt for weeks or longer, with consistent treatments!

My Promise

I aim to educate my patients in a safe environment while offering them necessary comprehensive care. The power of focused tissue manipulation has been clinically proven to improve circulation of lymphatic fluid toward the lymph nodes, where it is “drained”. Dandelion Massage Boston has perfected these techniques through rigorous clinical training, continued education, and individual client assessment.

After your cosmetic surgery, it is highly recommended that you receive a series of Lymphatic Drainage Massages to keep the excess swelling from becoming painful. There are many types of lymphatic massages out there, but after surgery, you should stick to the hands-on manual variety.
